o     Meet the Masters – our art program, sponsored by our PTA, began last month. The first artist our students learned about was Joan Miro. Miro was a Spanish painter, whose surrealist works, with their subject matter drawn from the realm of memory and imaginative fantasy, are some of the most original of the 20th century. Miró was born April 20, 1893, in Barcelona and studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and the Academia Galí. His work before 1920 shows wide-ranging influences, including the bright colors of the Fauves, the broken forms of cubism, and the powerful, flat two-dimensionality of Catalan folk art and Romanesque church frescoes of his native Spain.

o   GATE - our GATE students will be participating in a district-wide Spelling Bee for GATE students. The Spelling Bee will be held on Wednesday, February 24th, beginning at 6:00 pm at Ekstrand Elementary School. Best of luck to Mrs. Horne and her GATE students.

o      Kidscan - will take place on Thursday, February 25, 2010. This is part of our monthly recycling program, which is also a Student Council fundraiser.

o   PTA Founder's Day - this event recognizes the PTA and all they do for schools. We will be recognizing the La Verne Heights PTA and its volunteers on February 11, 2010. The program will begin at 6:30 pm, and it features a performance by our kindergarten students.
