10 pts for having support for reasons (and having at least 2 reason paragraphs)

10 pts for introduction with a hook and clear thesis statement

5 pts. for a conclusion that restates thesis and reasons.

 

 

Students will be able to use the ideas from this essay in their Schoolwide Writing Test on Thursday.  They will NOT be able to copy it from the paper, so they will have to do their best to review and remember what they can.  This gives them the opportunity to fine tune their ideas so that they are ready for Thursday.

2.  Continue Sword in the Stone (Venn Diagram(

1.  Students create may either take a sentence from Sword in the Stone or create their own Sword in the Stone inspired sentence and write it on one half of a paper.  On the OTHER half of the paper students will write the sentence INCORRECTLY with errors.  Students should inlcude 6-10 errors that inlcude at least one of each of the following error types:

 

-capitilization erors

-end punctuation

-verb tense

-spelling

-words commonly used (their, they’re and they’re

 

Here’s a sample INCORRECT sentence taken from page 416, 2nd column, 2nd papragraph from the top:

 

silently the old sorserer lead the king to an balkonee and pointing upward

 

Students will than have someone else correct their paper (and sign it) using the proper correction marks.

Students are to return this signed on Wednesday.  Absent students will return the paper on Thursday (or immediately following the day they return).

Today I collected Ex. 9-12 and Ex. 13-15 along with their Study Guide for Words Often Confused.

 

Students were also giving credit for following written directions on the board.  The following was written on the board:

 

If you:  copy your agenda, put your HW in the left corner of the desk, clear your desk except for a pen, sit quietly with hand folded on the desk,

 

Then:  you get extra credit.

 

I personally walked around the room and checked to see if ALL instructions were followed.  Those students were given the extra credit.  I will occasionally give these directions as a REGULAR CLASS GRADE.  Students have been told from the first day of school to always read the board and do their best to follow the directions written their.

HW-  see page 515.  Students will take a movie, book, or show they’ve seen and identify 4-5 key words from the story (i.e. in Star Wars “force”, “evil”, “good”, and “war”). 

 

Then students pick ONE word from that list and say why it is important in the story.  (“Force” is an important word in Star Wars because the good guys and bad guys use the force.  Luke learns to use the force and destroys the Death Star.)

 

Finally students will write a one sentence theme statement.

 

“Using your powers for good can benefit all people. “

1.  Students received a new ACR (green) to keep track of assignments that Mr. Guiles has graded. 

2.  The AR Competition is an ongoing reading incentive program.  Students read any books on “The List” (click HERE to see it—it’s a big page so it may take a minute to fully load—be patient).  Each book has a certain point value associated with it.  These points count towards extra credit in the class.  Students will also be competing for prizes in other categories (Most points, Most Classics points, highest points for third quarter, Most Non-fiction, Most Quizzes passed, etc.)
